Kylian Mbappé led the way as Real Madrid eased past an out-of-sorts Athletic Club in Sunday's rearranged LaLiga encounter at San Mamés. The French superstar scored twice, one either side of half-time, and also supplied the assist for the other in a match that was dominated by Madrid from the very first whistle to the last.
With 25 goals this season, Mbappé opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a classic solo goal, and soon after headed the ball across the box for Camavinga to make it 2-0. On the hour-mark, Mbappé sealed the victory with a strong shot from outside the box.
A quick start by Real Madrid
The match kicked off with an intense high phase of play. Madrid almost scored early as Athletic's Vivian mis-hit a clearance, allowing Mbappé to break through, but goalkeeper Unai Simón managed to stop the attack. Moments later, Simón denied Vini Jr. too. However, Mbappé soon broke the deadlock after receiving a perfect pass from Trent; he beat two defenders and finished beautifully from the edge of the box.
Camavinga makes it 2–0
Athletic tried to respond, but Courtois handled their chances well. Then, Madrid created several openings through Vini Jr., first hitting the post and then missing another one-on-one opportunity.
Just before halftime, a wonderful team move involving several Madrid players — Valverde, Vini Jr., Mbappé, Carreras and Bellingham — finished with Trent crossing the ball. Mbappé headed it onto Camavinga, who scored from close range.
Mbappé seals the deal
The second half was more physical and at a slower pace, but Mbappé still managed to pull out another magical moment in the box in the 59th minute, as he controlled the ball and fired a powerful, accurate shot past Simón to make it 3–0.
With a comfortable advantage, Madrid managed the game and didn't really allow too many threats. The last real chance was by Valverde, but Simón saved it.
The only downside for Madrid was the injuries to Trent and Camavinga, who both had to leave the match early.
