FC Barcelona were within a whisker’s breadth of orchestrating an incredible comeback, but Atlético Madrid held their nerves to earn a dramatic 3-0 aggregate win and seal their Copa del Rey final berth.
After the 4-0 thrashing in the first leg, Barca needed a miracle to be staged at the Spotify Camp Nou, and for large parts, it looked like one was indeed brewing.
A Night of Belief and Fire
Right from the get-go, Hansi Flick’s men pressed Atlético with real intent. The high press continued to strangle Atlético, with Juan Musso the busier goalkeeper between the two teams.
Raphinha’s shot crashed off the woodwork in the opening minutes, and Ferran Torres kept the Atlético defense on their toes with two quick-fire attempts. When Jules Koundé suffered an injury and had to be replaced by Alejandro Balde, the high press continued to be the hallmark of the Blaugrana attack.
And the breakthrough wasn’t long in coming, with pure magic from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal slicing the Atlético defense apart, and 18-year-old Marc Bernal finding the back of the net with a clinical finish in the 29th minute.
Suddenly, the unthinkable didn’t seem so unthinkable after all.
Raphinha Keeps the Dream Alive
Atlético, however, had their own moments too. Antoine Griezmann scored a shot that hit the woodwork before he was called back for offside, and Ademola Lookman squandered a good chance. But just before the half, more drama ensued.
Pedri was brought down in the box by Clement Lenglet, and Raphinha took the chance with nerves of steel, calmly scoring past Musso. At 2-0 up on the night, the deafening roar at the Camp Nou Stadium was electric.
The comeback very much alive.
Bernal’s Brilliance, But Not Enough
After the break, Atlético showed glimpses of their potency again. Julián Álvarez forced Joan García into a good save, but Barca continued to press.
With 18 minutes to go, Bernal scored again, this time gliding past the ball to João Cancelo’s cross to make it three on the night, and cap a brilliant personal display. Four goals in four games for the teenager, and the star has announced himself on the big stage.
Marcus Rashford was brought on late, but the pressure never abated, nor the faith shaken.
The fourth goal that was to be the clincher never came.
The ball from Gerard Martín’s curling shot just skimmed past in stoppage time as Barcelona came as close as they ever could to forcing the tie to go to extra time.
Atlético Stands Tall
Diego Simeone and his team rode out the storm as they always do. When the final whistle was blown, it was Atlético who were celebrating their survival and qualification, while Barcelona walked away with what could have been.
Despite the exit, the evening was a testament to Barcelona’s determination, their bright and fearless youth, and their attacking flair. While the dream of retaining the championship will remain in the semi-finals, the determination on display will never be forgotten.
Atlético will go on to the final, where they will face the winners of the tie between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club in their bid to lift the championship.
