Erling Haaland finally rediscovered his scoring form as Manchester City secured their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Galatasaray at the Etihad Stadium.

Haaland had been struggling to find his scoring form, but he ended his open-play drought in style, and it set the tone for a confident display from Manchester City. Rayan Cherki scored the second goal before the half-time interval to ensure Pep Guardiola’s side were in complete control of the match.
The victory, coupled with other results, propelled the 2023 champions into eighth place in the league phase standings, enabling them to avoid the perilous play-off round that had ruined their season last year. There was a tense wait for the final result, but the news of Real Madrid’s defeat at Benfica came through, securing City’s passage.

City burst out of the traps and almost scored within the first three minutes when Haaland headed wide from a delicious cross by Rayan Aït-Nouri. The Norwegian didn’t miss for long. Jérémy Doku tore through the Galatasaray defense with his characteristic burst of speed and laid a sublime pass into Haaland’s path, and the striker calmly chipped goalkeeper Ugurcan Çakir to break the deadlock.

City continued to pour forward. Nico O’Reilly forced Çakir to make a spectacular save with a powerful long-range shot before the second goal came in the 29th minute. Doku again showed his lightning speed inside the box and pulled the ball back for Cherki, who took a composing touch before slotting home confidently.

The only negative for City was the injury Doku suffered, forced off after another pulsating display, which will add to Guardiola’s already lengthy list of absentees.
Galatasaray, with a raucous and vibrant support that had filled the city center with noise and fireworks before kick-off, struggled to carve out genuine opportunities in the opening exchanges. Victor Osimhen was their most potent force after the break, forcing saves and testing the City rearguard, but they could not find a way past.

The second half was punctuated by several stoppages, including a delay for on-field protests and a lengthy hold-up following a clash of heads between Tijjani Reijnders and Davinson Sánchez, who both carried on with bandages.

As the pace slowed in the closing stages, City remained calm and saw the game out with ease – securing qualification and avoiding additional fixtures in the coming month as they press on in pursuit of trophies on multiple fronts.

Job done for Manchester City. A professional victory, a first Haaland goal in a long time, and a straightforward path to the knockout stages – mission accomplished.
