West Indies extended their lead to a 42-run victory over Italy in Kolkata, cruising through the 37th Group C encounter of the T20 World Cup 2026 on February 19. A thrilling innings by Shai Hope set the tone, and a disciplined bowling performance sealed the deal.

Hope Sets the Tone as WI Reach 165/6

WI began their innings first and started cautiously but well, reaching 48/2 within the powerplay. Italy reviews immediately after the fall of Brandon King, but Hope took the reins and never let them go.

Hope struck with authority, smashing a 28-ball fifty with six fours and two sixes. He dominated the middle overs with purpose, rotating the strike and smashing anything loose. By the 14th over, WI had crossed the 100-run mark with Hope continuing to dictate terms, even as wickets fell at the other end. His presence kept the opposition's chase under control, especially in the death overs.

Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford added some useful late overs, helping West Indies reach 165/6 in 20 overs.

Italy Under Pressure in Response

Italy began their chase with early trouble as WI struck three times in the Powerplay, scoring only 37 runs in the first six overs and losing vital wickets, falling behind the required rate.

Although there were some signs of resistance in the middle overs, Italy struggled to form any substantial partnerships. Extras contributed to their total, but regular WI wickets denied them any momentum.

By the 14th over, Italy had reached 94/5, and the chase was slipping away from them as the required rate accelerated, leading to more aggressive shots and further wickets.

Italy were all out for 123 in 18 overs, 42 runs short.

Player of the Match

Shai Hope was awarded the Player of the Match award for his 75 off 46 and two catches in the field, ending a brilliant all-round performance.
