India delivered a batting display of brilliance to defeat Zimbabwe by 72 runs in the 48th T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights (Group 1) match played in Chennai on February 26, 2026.

India chose to bat first and got off to a flying start with a dazzling power play. They reached 80/1 in the first six overs, with Abhishek Sharma leading the charge. India reached 50 in just 4.1 overs, setting the tone for the innings. Abhishek smashed a rapid fifty off 26 balls, hitting the boundaries four times and the fence with ease.

The momentum just didn’t stop as India reached 100 in the 10th over and 150 in the 13th. Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan ensured that the runs kept flowing in, before Hardik Pandya launched a late attack. Pandya’s thrilling 50 not out off 23 balls, along with Tilak Varma’s elegant 44, helped India cross 200 in the 17th over. Despite a slow over-rate penalty in the final over, India were reduced to 256/4 in 20 overs – one of the highest totals in the tournament.

Zimbabwe, in their innings, showed early intent, reaching 44 without a single loss in the power play. Brian Bennett came out all guns blazing with an aggressive fifty off 34 balls, leading the charge and forming a solid partnership with Sikandar Raza. Zimbabwe crossed 100 in the 14th over and even threatened to challenge India, but the required rate proved too much for them.

Crucial breakthroughs, including timely reviews in the middle and death overs, helped India regain control. Zimbabwe eventually ended their innings on 184/6 in 20 overs, well short of the target.

Hardik Pandya was awarded the Player of the Match for his late onslaught and leadership with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 50 off 23 balls to seal a resounding victory for India.
