The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is set to return for Round 2 of the new season at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Mexico City on 10 January 2026. Following the thrilling opening event in São Paulo, viewers can look forward to yet another electrifying experience for Formula E fans who are renowned for being one of the most passionate groups of motorsport enthusiasts worldwide.

This race is all the more special as it is the 150th race for Formula E, which is a significant milestone for the all-electric car racing championship. The Formula E championship has its inception in 2014 with its first race at Beijing and has since then expanded with terrific speed over the last 12 years by hosting its races at world-famous destinations.

Mexico City: The Historic Formula E Circuit

It would mark the tenth appearance of Formula E at this circuit for the 2026 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix. Since its debut in Season 2, this event has produced a total of seven different winners, with the three most recent champions going on to take out the FIA Drivers’ World Title within the same year.

Among these, Jake Dennis from Andretti Formula E is one winner who achieved victory in Mexico City in 2023 and became the first to win in a GEN3. Jake Dennis leads the Season 12 (2025/26) points standing with a strong win from the pole position in São Paulo, scoring a maximum of 25 points.

Circuit Modifies to Encourage More Action

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit is one of the oldest tracks that the Formula E championship has ever visited. It is second to the USA and Germany, which have hosted more races.
For 2026, the circuit layout has been more recently revised to enhance racing:

Turn 1 is now narrower with better visibility for drivers

The chicane between Turns 8 and 9 has been deleted, which can potentially create some passing.

ATTACK MODE also stays at the iconic Foro Sol stadium, which still generates the most incredible atmosphere with tens of thousands of fans. The Mexico City race is physically demanding with the track situated 2,240 meters above sea level and is often tough for drivers and cars alike.

Voices from the Paddock

Pablo Martino, head of Formula E at the FIA, commented that the Mexico City E-Prix is a proud moment for the championship as it reaches 150 races. He underlined Formula E's role in innovation, in sustainability and offering exciting racing, anticipating another high-quality event following the action-packed São Paulo race.
Oliver Rowland, who races for the Nissan Formula E Team and has won in Mexico City in 2025, stated that the passion that emanates from Mexican fans is something that is indelible in one's memory. He is optimistic that the removal of the chicane might make the competition even better and hopes to follow in the footsteps of previous winners, as Mexico City winners often go on to claim the drivers’ title.

"A victory in São Paulo is a fantastic start, and now we need to concentrate on Mexico City," said Jesse Johnson, with Jake Dennis echoing his sentiments, adding, "We have a good pace, and we want to have a clean weekend."

The Evolution of Formula E to Reach 150 Races

Although Formula E had its roots in car swaps during races, it has come a long way. The racing season has attracted big car manufacturers like Porsche, Nissan, Jaguar, Mahindra, and Citroen, with much lighter, faster, and environmentally friendly cars.

The present car, called the GEN3 Evo, accelerates from 0-60 mph in only 1.82 seconds and has the following features:

More aggressive aerodynamics

During starts, qualifying battles, or ATTACK MODE engagements, all four wheels maintain contact with the track.
With the GEN4 car scheduled to make its debut next season, Formula E is once again pushing the boundaries of electric racing.

FIA Girls on Track in Mexico City

Formula E is also committed to inclusion and education via its Girls on Track program from the FIA. At the Mexico City E-Prix 2026, a total of 120 young females will participate in workshops, esports, career sessions, as well as a Pit Lane Walk.

In conjunction with OMDAI FIA Mexico, free racing tickets worth 240 have been awarded to the participants, and another 800 tickets are up for grabs for different applicants. This event hopes to motivate young females to pursue a career in the motor and engineering industries.
