Day 2 of the 1st Test between New Zealand and the West Indies at Christchurch produced a mix of gritty batting, consistent bowling, and weather interruptions. Despite a determined effort from Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Shai Hope, New Zealand ended the day in a stronger position.

New Zealand Bowled Out for 231

New Zealand began the morning looking to stretch their total but were bowled out for 231 in 70.3 overs. The innings ended after a New Zealand review for the final wicket—ZG Foulkes was given out on review, with umpire AG Wharf’s decision standing.

Early Strikes Put West Indies Under Pressure

West Indies’ reply got off to a shaky start. New Zealand struck twice early, and a review in the 12th over against Tagenarine Chanderpaul was upheld as umpire’s call, keeping him at the crease.

At drinks, West Indies were struggling at 16/2 in 15 overs, with Chanderpaul on 5 and Shai Hope on 4.

Hope and Chanderpaul Stabilize the Innings

The third-wicket partnership brought much-needed stability:

50-run stand in 90 balls

West Indies reached 50 in 23.1 overs

Chanderpaul and Hope batted patiently to reach lunch at 68/2 in 29 overs

Shai Hope brought up a well-made 50 off 83 balls (4 fours), showing great control and patience. At the 42-over mark, West Indies were 97/2, slowly rebuilding their innings.

They crossed 100 in 42.5 overs, but immediately after, New Zealand reviewed an appeal against Hope — this time the decision was upheld, dismissing him for 55.

Middle-Order Collapse After Tea

West Indies went into tea at 120/5 in 54 overs, as New Zealand bowlers tightened their grip. Chanderpaul remained solid, bringing up a hard-earned 50 off 165 balls, showcasing tremendous discipline.

It was also confirmed that TWM Latham kept wickets from the start of the West Indies’ innings due to an injury to Tom Blundell.

Another review went New Zealand’s way when TA Imlach was struck down in the 64th over, leaving West Indies deeper in trouble.

Rain Interruption and Late Collapse

West Indies reached 150 in 65.4 overs, with extras playing a notable part (22). Rain arrived with the visitors at 157/6 in 71 overs, delaying play.

After the restart, Imlach fell to another review—this time West Indies challenged the decision, but the umpire’s call was upheld.

The innings eventually folded for 167 in 75.4 overs, with Kemar Roach contributing 10* at the end.

New Zealand Begin Strong in Second Innings

With a lead of 64 runs, New Zealand openers TWM Latham (14) and Devon Conway (15)** started confidently, reaching 32/0 in 7 overs before stumps.
